Hub brakes, both of the drum brake type (Sturmey Archer and SRAM) and the roller brake type (Shimano) use a torque arm to transfer force into the fork while braking. This connects to a small hook of metal which is brazed onto some forks. A lowest cost alternative to fitting a new fork, which also takes much less work, is to use an adapter like this.
