If you want higher handlebars in a less stretched out position, the easiest way of achieving this is often to change the handlebar stem. This is quite an easy job to do. First undo the bolt under the stem which holds the handlebars in place, and the bolt on the top of the stem (after undoing, this often requires a gentle tap to free it). Remove the handlebar grip, brake and gear levers from one side of the handlebar, and you can then swap the stems over. Re-fit everything and you can set the handlebars to a higher position.

We also have adjustable stems which give a bit more variation in position, but a fixed stem like this can be more rigid and is also a little less expensive.

These are quill type stems made of stainless steel and aluminium and designed for a 25.4 mm diameter handlebar clamp. They are compatible with the handlebars that we sell. We also have stems for threadless headset.

The lengths given are the overall length of each stem. The usable length is always a little less due to the minimum insertion lengths for each stem. This varies depending on the stem length. As an example, the 300 mm long stem has a usable length of 200 mm between the minimum insertion mark and the centre of the handlebars.

The 300 mm long stems use two bolts to attach the handlebars, it is possible to move your handlebars to these stems without having to remove grips, gear and brake levers.

The reach and height are personal choices. The diameter must match the internal diameter of your forks. 22.2 (7/8th inch) is the most common size for traditional bikes, this being the inside diameter of most 25.4 mm (1 inch) forks. 25.4 mm diameter stems fit with 28.6 mm (1 1/8th inch) forks. The 21 mm diameter is less common, used with 25.4 mm forks on some bicycles, notably older Schwinn bikes. We have only the one size of 21 mm stems.
