About Us
We'd like to help practical everyday cycling spread to other countries. This is why the shop mainly is stocked with products which are popular in the Netherlands for everyday cycling, which are known to work well, and in particular those with which we have personal experience.
We ride bikes every day for work, for pleasure, for touring and racing and we need good components. The components that we sell come in two categories - they are either parts which we have on our own bicycles and through this we have them on our own long term test or they are parts with which we've experience elsewhere and know that they work well, or offer particularly good value.
The Netherlands has a higher rate of cycling than any other country, and the market for bicycles and bicycle components is huge. This has an almost Darwinian effect on the market for bicycle components. Those products which work well rapidly rise in popularity compared with those which do not.
Environmental and climae policy
We take the environment seriously and use several techniques to reduce our impact:
- Our parcels always start their journey to you by bicycle
- We generate more electricity than we use from solar power
- We don't own or use anything that burns fossil fuels. We have no cars or vans and our gas-free home and office are powered by our solar electricity.
- So far as possible we use recycled materials for packaging, even though this costs us time.
- We sell only robust good quality parts and accessories and not limited life-span gimmicks.
- Our well priced range of items to keep older bicycles on the road for longer, reduces the impact of new bicycle production.
- In the past we organised Study Tours of Dutch Cycling Infrastructure for those who are interested in how the Dutch have achieved the highest cycling modal share in the world. We now suggest that people do not visit. There is now ample information online.
We have several blogs
- The Dutch Bike Bits blog, about components and bicycle maintenance.
- A View from the Cycle-Path is our campaigning blog, through which we try to bring to English speaking countries the knowledge that the Dutch have about how to make cycling viable for the entire population.
- There's also a blog for things which don't fit the other blogs
