Cassettes, Freewheels and Sprockets

These days, most bikes which use multi-speed cassette type gearing have Shimano compatible splines so that it's possible to choose between Shimano cassettes, SRAM cassettes and the often cheaper compatible alternative of a Sunrace cassette.

The multi-speed freewheels which we sell all use the Shimano type of splined tool for fitting, which is much more reliable in use than the two and four tooth tools which were used previously.

Sprockets for hub gears mostly use the three rounded splines originally used by Sturmey Archer. These are available in multiple sizes to achieve different gearing ratios.

Choosing larger sprocket sizes than you have at present will reduce the gearing on your bike, which can be helpful if you have trouble climbing hills. Choosing smaller sprocket sizes will increase the gearing on your bike, allowing higher speeds without spinning out.

When most people think about changing their cassette/freewheel, it's often the case that their chain and front chainrings are already worn. It's best to change chains more often to reduce the cost of replacing cassettes and chainrings. We recommend use of a chain wear checking tool to assess chain wear and prevent premature damage to other parts.
